Synopsis and Discussion
Local June ozone levels have now unofficially entered into uncharted
territory. Preliminary data indicates that Tuesday's peak level of only
43 parts per billion (36-AQI) is the lowest reported during the month of
June for the period of record 1996-2009. The previous low concentration
was 45ppb on June 10 2003. The current synoptic weather pattern of a
long-wave upper level trough over the eastern Pacific and western U.S.
appears to be locked in place - at least one model suggesting for
another 10 days or so. Periodic short-wave systems - like the one on
Tuesday - are forecast to translate thru the longer period feature with
enhanced winds, cool air injection, and cloud cover the main impacts.
Thus it appears that a near-persistence type forecast should work well
for at least the next few days.
