Synopsis and Discussion
*TODAY'S OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN EXTENDED THRU FRIDAY JULY 24*
Another thunderstorm outflow boundary impacted the east and southeast Valley by 8:00 p.m. last night in the form of winds gusting near 35 mph and blowing dust at Falcon Field and Williams Gateway Airports. Ozone levels reached Health Watch criteria (90+ AQI)on Wednesday at the South Scottsdale monitoring site, and as of 11:00 a.m. today hourly concentrations were running from -4 to +9 parts per billion higher than 24 hours ago, with absolute hourly readings in the 46-56 ppb range. A recent AMDAR sounding indicated that winds over the metro area were southeast to southerly from the surface to ~8900' then easterly to 17K'. It appears therefore that ozone levels have the potential to again reach Health Watch criteria; however, much will hinge on the longevity and opacity of cloud cover currently increasing over the area from the southeast. Friday's situation is forecast to be much like today's, so the existing Ozone Health Watch has been extended.
