Synopsis and Discussion

*AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THURSDAY JULY 23*

The sub-tropical monsoon high center is on the move again, with a position taken near the Four Corners expected by Thursday. Not only will this increase the likelihood for strong Rim storms to move toward the Valley during the afternoon, but the clockwise flow around the high raises the potential for a deep easterly wind regime to develop over the metro area. One forecast model is already showing such an easterly flow pattern from the surface to 10K' by Thursday morning, while another keeps westerly winds going aloft and at the surface. Since the forecast position of the high is frequently associated with the former - as well as a subsequent jump in local ozone levels due to the accumulative effects of down-valley winds - an Ozone Health Watch has been issued for Thursday. Despite recent heavy but spotty rainfall, strong winds from thunderstorm downdrafts will almost always be capable of generating additional blowing dust as they did at Williams Gateway Airport last evening; visibilities there dropped as low as five miles.
