Synopsis and Discussion

*AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR FRIDAY, JULY 10, 2009*

High pressure in the vicinity is still having a bit of trouble gaining control of the entire west coast up through Alaska. This has limited the constant influx of moisture from the south. In fact, the current position of the high puts the Phoenix forecast area under a relatively dry southwesterly flow. Winds are expected to decrease on Saturday which will allow locally generated ozone to remain closer to the center of the Valley. Where highest ozone concentrations have been in the northeast part of the Valley the past several days, Saturday's highest levels could be at sites such as North Phoenix, Pinnacle Peak, and Cave Creek. Winds pick up again Sunday afternoon, pushing the invisible ozone plume to the east. Being spread over a broader area, maximum concentrations should be lower on Sunday.
Particulates have consistently been in the "Good" range the past several days. Higley had the last "Moderate" reading back on July 1 (56 AQI), and before that was West 43rd at on June 25 (53 AQI). With a very stable atmosphere and little moisture to play with, thunderstorm activity will continue to be absent across much of the state this weekend. Thus, no major episodes of blowing dust are expected to impact the Phoenix forecast area. Check back on Sunday for a look at the coming week's weather and air quality. Until then, have a great weekend!
