Synopsis and Discussion
AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR FRIDAY JULY 10
A weak outflow boundary from distant thunderstorms managed to make it
over portions of the metro area late Wednesday evening. Southeasterly
wind gusts up to 25 mph were measured at Sky Harbor and there was
probably even some blowing dust over the southeast Valley, where the
Higley PM-10 (coarse particle) monitor recorded an hourly concentration
of 244.8ug/m3 at 10:00 p.m. There is only a slight chance of a repeat
performance later today, but were it to occur, it would likely
contribute to elevated local ozone levels anticipated to begin on Friday
and potentially continue thru the weekend. Although daytime cloud cover
will be mostly absent and afternoon high temperatures at or above 110
deg F, the main impetus for the rise in ozone levels is an advertised
change in the wind profile aloft from southwest and westerly to
southeast and southerly. Since winds in the 5-10K' layer are also
forecast to decline during the same period, this sets the stage for high
ozone accumulation to coincide with high ozone production. As a result,
an Ozone Health Watch has been issued for Friday with weekend extensions
under consideration.
