Synopsis and Discussion
Local ozone levels are ramping up a bit faster this a.m. than 24 hours ago. At noon wind reports from Valley airports indicate speeds mostly 10 mph or less area-wide and from directions varying from southeast to westerly. Also, even though recent AMDAR sounding data revealed that the winds at Sky Harbor were <10 mph below 4200', they were southwesterly 20-30 mph between 8K and 12K'. Thus another breezy to gusty afternoon is expected to help keep ozone accumulation in check, with locations over the far eastern county having the highest ozone readings - in the low to mid-moderate range of the Air Quality Index. This pattern will likely repeat itself for several more afternoons, but an advertised weakening of low-level gradients may delay the onset of westerly winds or keep speeds a bit lighter; either would result in higher ozone levels. Otherwise, air quality is expected to remain relatively good thru Thursday.
