Synopsis and Discussion
Hot and dry will likely sum up the Valley weather situation this week. The sub-tropical high has been shunted to the south; the resulting westerly flow aloft has temporarily cut off the summer monsoon moisture source. In the short-term persistent southwest to westerly winds in the 5-10K' layer above the PHX metro area will serve to reinforce the afternoon upslope valley winds induced by intense heating this time of year. Although local ozone production is at its peak, incoming air from the vast desert areas upstream from the Valley will provide excellent dilution and dispersion of the ozone plume. Thus, the only ozone monitors apt to even reach the moderate range of the Air Quality Index the next few days are those located in areas downwind of the Valley - such as Apache Junction, Queen Valley, and Tonto National Monument. Since there were be no blowing dust to contend with either, good overall air quality is expected.
