Synopsis and Discussion
An embedded shortwave pushed west Tuesday afternoon and evening resulting in severe storms just east of Tucson. The storms moved west through the night. Light showers continue to fall just south of Casa Grande early Wednesday morning. Associated clouds extend north into the Phoenix metro area, but should clear by the early afternoon. There continues to be ample moisture (surface dew points in the upper 50s to lower 60s) and plenty of energy to sustain a moderate thunderstorm here in the Valley. Clearing of the clouds and subsequent surface heating may give the Valley that opportunity Wednesday afternoon. Still, models suggest that late Friday into early Saturday will be the best chance for Phoenix rain.
Air quality for the most part remained in the "Good" range with three east Valley sites reaching the "Moderate" range. Tonto National Monument was had the highest concentrations, climbing to 74 on the Air Quality Index (AQI). An Ozone Health Watch remains in effect for Wednesday, though unexpected early morning cloud cover may limit maximum ozone production.
