Synopsis and Discussion
A PM-2.5 HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THURSDAY JANUARY 08
The air mass over the Valley is predicted to continue becoming
increasingly stagnant thru Thursday. Latest ACARS sounding data
indicates that the best mixing depth today will be near 3700' and that
dispersion will be POOR to MARGINAL. Since the moderate (4-5 deg C)
surface-based radiation inversion that formed overnight reaches all the
way to 4600', the inversion will not break today. Fine particle
(PM-2.5) levels are trending upward, due in part to a likely increase in
residential wood burning in some areas of the metro area. Last evening
one monitoring site recorded an hourly concentration just shy of
40ug/m3, and several others had readings at or above 30ug/m3. Since
mixing heights are forecast to be near 2500' on Thursday and be
accompanied by another lengthy period of mostly light winds, PM-2.5
levels will have the potential to approach unhealthy levels. For these
reasons a PM-2.5 Health Watch has been issued for Thursday. Some
cooling aloft on Friday may improve dispersion characteristics enough to
eliminate the need for an extension, but this situation will be
evaluated again tomorrow. -Reith
