Synopsis and Discussion
The upper level trough that brought cool, rainy, and foggy conditions to
the metro area the past 36 hours or so will be moving east today. In
its place a rather strong ridge aloft is advertised to build overhead
from the west - peaking in strength late Wednesday and all day Thursday.
Strong warming aloft will accompany this transition; by Wednesday
afternoon temperatures overhead at the 10K' level are projected to
increase by 21 deg F with 18 deg F of warming at the 5K' level. Surface
temperatures are only expected to rise eight degrees F during the same
interval so an increasingly stagnant air mass is in store for the
Valley. Northerly breezes will be present on Tuesday but by Wednesday
afternoon winds are anticipated to become mostly <10 mph which
will result in unfavorable dispersion. On the plus side, the latest
episode of rainfall will help keep coarse particle (PM-10) levels way
below their potential; however, fine particle (PM-2.5) concentrations
may become a problem again by mid-week if residential wood burning
resumes. -Reith
