Synopsis and Discussion
*A PM-2.5 HEALTH WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR FRIDAY, JANUARY 2, 2009*
What a way to start 2009 - with the worst air quality day since New
Year's Day 2007! All PM-2.5 monitors exceeded the health standard on
Thursday except for Dysart in the northwest part of the Valley. Despite
issuing numerous Health Watches and NO BURNING ordinance, poor air
quality could not be avoided for the fifth consecutive year. Carbon
Monoxide levels made a return to the "Moderate" category for the first
time since January 1, 2007. Change is on the way as high pressure over
the forecast area will begin to break down the next couple of days,
paving the way for trough of low pressure to move in from the west.
This system will bring cooler temperatures, dropping the desert highs
into the low to mid 60s this weekend. We're also looking at a chance of
rain late Sunday into early Monday morning. High pressure will return
by the end of next week with a warm-up expected for much of Arizona.
Air quality-wise, we'll see PM-2.5 levels come back to Earth, but
remain in the low to mid "Moderate" range through the weekend. PM-10
concentrations, which have recently found their way to the "Moderate"
range, should also improve. We will allow the current Health Watch to
expire at midnight on Friday with no further extension. Check back on
Sunday for the latest on the coming work-week's weather and air quality.
Until then, have a great weekend! -J.Paul
