Synopsis and Discussion
That was a pretty exciting weather day yesterday with rain in the
deserts and snow in the mountains (one to two feet of new snow at Snow
Bowl Ski Resort near Flagstaff!). Dark, low-lying clouds, isolated
severe cells, some with rotation... that's a weather person's dream!
Despite rotation and a lowering cloud base with one of the severe cells
to move through central Phoenix, near North Mountain, there was no
actual tornado observed. Dime-sized hail in that part of the Valley was
reported, however. Overall, this past weekend was a great as far as
rain goes. Since Friday, Sun City received about 0.75 inches, Peoria
had almost a half an inch, and Paradise Valley recorded about an inch
and a half! The only gauge that really matters for national bragging
rights is Sky Harbor. Since Friday, it collected a healthy 1.26 inches
of rain. We'll take what we can get. The National Climate Prediction
Center indicates that we will be near to slightly below normal for rain
(see: www.cpc.noaa.gov) from March through May, returning to normal
through early next year. There's a bulls-eye right over Arizona for
Temperature through early next year. So if you like this cool weather,
enjoy it while it lasts...
The air has been successfully scrubbed of any accumulating particle
pollution. Visibility is so good that snow on the Bradshaw Mountains
north of the Valley can be seen from downtown Phoenix, about 50 miles
away. Both PM-10 (coarse particulates) and PM-2.5 (fine particulates)
are well in the "Good" range of the Air Quality Index (AQI) and will
remain there through the rest of the week.
More storms are lining up. The next disturbance, though lacking in
moisture, will bring wind on Thursday. Saturday through Monday looks
like another good shot for more rain, possibly a half an inch or more
here in the Valley. This pattern will continue through next week with a
disturbance ever few days. This is great news for our air quality.
Check back tomorrow for more. Have a good day! -J.Paul
