Synopsis and Discussion
The next in a series of cold and potentially very wet upper level
troughs and surface cold fronts will arrive over the local forecast area
tonight and Tuesday. Although winds will be gusty at times with this
system, recent rainfall - over one inch at some locations - will prevent
blowing dust from occurring. Since cold air aloft and gusty winds at
times will also keep stagnation at bay, overall good air quality is
being predicted thru Tuesday. With very cold air settling over the
Valley Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, residential fireplace use
may be on the increase. If so, with relatively light winds and some
warming aloft over the metro area, there is the potential for a rapid
but temporary rise in fine particle (PM-2.5) levels due to an
accumulation of smoke emissions; this possibility has been reflected on
this forecast cycle. -Reith
