Synopsis and Discussion
Another rather stagnant morning out there with the overnight formation
of a moderate (6-7 deg C) but tall (~2800') surface-based radiation
inversion that was instrumental in the soaring hourly coarse particle
(PM-10) concentrations at some locations; the Durango monitoring site
recorded 187.9ug/m3 at 7:00 a.m. and West Forty Third had 308.9ug/m3 at
8:00 a.m. Even relatively "clean" sites such as Greenwood and Coyote
Lakes had readings near 130ug/m3. Increasing clouds overhead indicate a
weather pattern change is in the offing. The first is a series of
increasing strong and cold upper level troughs and surface cold fronts
in the mid-latitude storm track is currently approaching southern
California this a.m. It will weaken significantly by the time it
reaches the Valley; no rainfall is expected but winds will be on the
increase by afternoon. A much larger disturbance will gather strength
offshore on Friday then move toward the local forecast area on Saturday
with showers likely and even a few thunderstorms possible by afternoon.
Gusty gradient winds will occur over the local forecast area the next
few afternoons; until significant rainfall occurs, fugitive dust
emissions are possible from those parts of the metro area where large
areas of disturbed soil exist. Otherwise, good air quality is expected
thru the weekend. -Reith
