Synopsis and Discussion
*AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 01*
On Sunday evening an outflow boundary from thunderstorm cells over Pinal County brought wind gusts near 35 mph to the southeast metro area by 8:00 p.m. Despite recent rainfall, sufficient dust (PM-10) was raised to produce hourly concentrations of that pollutant of 254.4ug/m3 at Higley at 8:00 p.m. and 314.2ug/m3 at the West Forty Third monitoring site at 9:00 p.m. With monsoon moisture on the increase and steering winds from the east to southeast the next few days, additional wind/dust events are probable. The same wind regime will tend to enhance local ozone accumulation. Although ozone exceedances in September are rare, this situation bears watching since under these wind flow conditions the most highly populated portions of the metro area may be impacted with elevated ozone levels. As a result, an Ozone Health Watch has been issued for Tuesday with an extension possible for Wednesday.
