Synopsis and Discussion

*AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR FRIDAY, AUGUST 28, 2009*

Near record heat is expected Friday and Saturday as sunny skies and relatively light winds prevail across the deserts of Arizona. The records of 113°F on Friday (set back in 2005) and 113°F (2007) are both in jeopardy with high pressure over southern Nevada.

Easterly winds are also expected to result in elevated ozone concentrations in the central and western part of the forecast area on Friday (target area: North Phoenix, Glendale, and Dysart). A subtle shift of the high over Arizona Saturday and Sunday will turn those winds out of the southwest, allowing the accumulating ozone and precursors to escape to the northeast. As the high weakens Sunday through Tuesday, afternoon desert temperatures will decrease to near normal.

Particulates continue their slow, steady rise into the upper part of the "Good" range. Lack of thunderstorm activity will allow the continued drying of the soil. There will also be little to no risk of associated wind-blown dust through the middle of next week. Thus, PM-10 and PM-2.5 should stay in the upper "Good" range the next several days.

Sensitive people should remember to take it easy on Friday with an Ozone Health Watch in effect through 4pm. Improving conditions will make for much better weekend. Check back on Sunday for the latest on your coming work-week's weather and air quality. Until then, have great weekend!
