Synopsis and Discussion

*AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR FRIDAY, AUGUST 28, 2009*

Models are pretty consistent with the flow at nearly all levels of the atmosphere being out of the east on Friday. High pressure is currently located over Nevada, providing Arizona with such conditions. We haven't seen it much this season, but this type of easterly flow tends to lock ozone and precursors in the Valley, preventing them from escaping to the east. In fact, this easterly flow may even push the invisible ozone plume west on Friday, causing typically low-concentration sites such as Dysart and Alamo Lake to experience elevated levels. No clouds or rain are in the forecast through at least the weekend, so maximum ozone production is expected on Friday and Saturday. Thus, we are issuing an Ozone Health Watch for Friday. Lower traffic emissions this weekend should result in slightly lower ozone levels.

Particulates are still slowly recovering from last Friday's rain event and should remain in the "Good" category through at least Sunday.

Check back on Friday for a closer look at your weekend's weather and related air quality. Until then, have a good day!
