Synopsis and Discussion
*FRIDAY'S OZONE HEALTH WATCH AND PM-10 HEALTH WATCH HAVE BEEN CANCELED*
The trough of low pressure over the western U.S. that brought the breezy to windy conditions on Thursday will weaken and slowly become absorbed by the main jet stream in Canada. This will allow high pressure to return to the region once again from its place of banishment to the southeast. By Tuesday of next week, we should see afternoon desert temperatures increase slightly, but increased moisture will offset any potential for record heat next week. The upper-level high pressure system will set up shop near the Four Corners, producing a small window for some late season showers and thunderstorms in the Phoenix forecast area by Thursday and Friday of next week.
The shift in winds will also bring a return of elevated ozone concentrations while the atmosphere becomes a bit more stable as well. In the mean time, ozone levels should reach the lower "Moderate" range at several sites this weekend under mostly sunny skies and relatively lighter winds.
Yesterday afternoon's strong winds were expected to deliver some widespread blowing dust as well as some ozone precursors. However, preliminary data indicates that the winds actually cleaned the air out somewhat. With lower than expected PM-10 and Ozone concentrations Friday morning, both Health Watches in effect for Friday have been canceled.
Check back on Sunday for look at the latest air quality conditions as well as look at the coming week's forecast. Until then, have a great weekend!
