Synopsis and Discussion
There was an apparent spike in ozone levels in the Yuma area on Monday, most likely due to an intrusion of ozone and/or its precursors from CA. It appears that this was a localized impact in that the ozone monitor at Alamo Lake in La Paz County did not register any unusual increases. In addition, there are no early indications that transport from CA is underway over the Valley. No significant changes in the local weather forecast the next few days with deep monsoon moisture seemingly bottled up over Mexico and no strong northward push forecast to occur. On top of this, an unusually strong and positioned upper level low and trough in the mid-latitude storm track are still advertised to track east over AZ later in the week, with a complete albeit temporary scouring out of monsoon moisture a distinct possibility. The good news is that some cooling will accompany its passage. In the short term particle pollutant concentrations are forecast to remain in the good range of the Air Quality Index while highest ozone readings will be in the mid-moderate range.
