Synopsis and Discussion
AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT TODAY
Local ozone levels over the weekend were held below their potential due to gusty afternoon winds and an unusually dry air mass. A modest rebound may occur today due to the increase in weekday precursor emissions. The AZ summer monsoon has reached its climatological peak, yet recent statewide thunderstorm activity has been rather anemic and short-lived, and completely absent locally for over a week. Deep moisture over Mexico does not appear inclined to move north, and another upper level trough anomaly off the CA coast is poised to move east after mid-week and scour out what moisture remains. In conjunction with this trough passage, it appears that highest Valley ozone readings this week may actually occur on Friday due to an influx of that pollutant and its precursors from CA. In the meantime, westerly flow in the lowest 5K' of the atmosphere over the Valley is expected to enhance breezy up-valley winds and keep ozone accumulations in check.
