Synopsis and Discussion
AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THURSDAY APRIL 30
It appears that local ozone levels will be trending upward the next few
days. As previously predicted, Yuma experienced a solid jump in ozone
levels on Tuesday - up nine parts per billion from Monday - an
indication that upstream ozone levels are significantly higher. Also,
the ozone monitor at Joshua Tree National Park reached the 90-AQI level
on Tuesday. At 10:00 a.m. Phoenix metro hourly ozone readings were
between 50 and 60 parts per billion at most locations, roughly between 5
and 10 ppb higher than 24 hours ago. A low-latitude southern branch of
the mid-latitude storm track will persist over the state into the
weekend, and winds in the 5-10K' layer within it are still advertised to
become sustained west to northwesterly over the next 24 hours. This
type of scenario has a lengthy track record of delivering additional
ozone and its precursors to the Valley, often resulting in elevated to
unhealthy ozone levels. On Thursday skies are forecast to be nearly
cloud-free, winds should be relatively subdued into the late afternoon
hours, and daytime temperatures will be topping the 90-degree mark - all
criteria conducive to efficient ozone production and accumulation. For
these reasons an Ozone Health Watch has been issued for Thursday. Even
though thick high cloud cover is expected on Friday, the Health Watch
may need to be extended. -Reith
