Synopsis and Discussion
Despite considerable and thick cloud cover during most of the afternoon period, peak Valley ozone levels on Monday were virtually unchanged from those on Sunday. Winds aloft upstream from the metro area have become southwesterly; this, combined with gusty south to southwesterly surface winds this afternoon, should tend to suppress ozone accumulation. Highest ozone readings today will likely occur at locations such as Cave Creek, Tonto National Monument, and Humboldt Mountain. A large upper level trough over the western U.S. is forecast to weaken and then dissipate in place during this forecast period. An inactive southern branch of the mid-latitude storm track will persist over the local forecast area, but low-level gradients will remain rather weak and afternoon winds will mainly be a function of daytime heating thru at least Friday. Since winds in the 5-10K' layer will become increasingly capable of transporting additional ozone and its precursors from California air sheds to the Phoenix area by Thursday afternoon, an Ozone Health Watch issuance is becoming increasingly likely.
