Synopsis and Discussion
A PM-10 HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR SATURDAY APRIL 25
Local peak ozone levels tied their highest values of the season thus far
on Thursday. This time most of the highest readings occurred downwind
of the major metro area due to westerly surface winds. There evidently
was a California ozone/precursor transport factor again as shown by
elevated concentrations at Alamo Lake - an upwind monitoring site in La
Paz County. A major weather pattern change is underway this a.m.; a
large and ultimately long-lived upper level trough in the mid-latitude
storm track will become established over the western U.S. the next few
days. The first in a series of embedded disturbances will likely bring
an episode of gusty winds and periods of blowing/suspended/transported
dust to the local forecast area on Saturday, and a PM-10 Health Watch
has been issued; the most recent wind event (April 14) produced areas of
blowing dust, and dry and very warm weather conditions have prevailed
since. In addition, since low-level winds will again be capable of CA
ozone transport both Saturday and Sunday, local air quality may be less
than desirable over the upcoming weekend. -Reith
