Synopsis and Discussion
*AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THURSDAY, APRIL 23, 2009*
Transport of ozone and precursors from southern California and desert
locations west of the Phoenix forecast area is currently underway. Yuma
has seen mid "Moderate" range ozone levels for two days while Alamo Lake
(approx. 100 miles northwest of downtown Phoenix) has just climbed into
the mid "Moderate" category in the last 24 hrs. This suggests an
upswing in ozone concentrations across the Valley can be expected
Thursday. With winds out of the southwest much of the day, the highest
concentrations will likely be in the north and east parts of the Valley.
Thus, an Ozone Health Watch remains in effect for Thursday.
High pressure will give way to a larger trough of low pressure that
will become cut off from the main flow and linger over the southwestern
U.S. through much of next week. Breezy conditions will develop Friday
afternoon with occasional gusts over 20 mph. Stronger winds can be
expected Saturday afternoon with a break on Sunday. Afternoon desert
temperatures will also drop to near normal (mid to upper 80s) Saturday
through much of next week under mostly sunny skies. No rain is expected
for at least the next 7 to 10 days. Winds on Friday and Saturday
combined with a relatively dry desert floor could lead a few periods of
blowing dust. PM-10 concentrations may reach the low to mid "Moderate"
range on Saturday. Local ozone should drop back into the "Good"
category by then with continued dispersion to the east. Check back
tomorrow for the latest look at the coming weekend's weather and
associated air quality. Until then, have a good day! -J.Paul
