Synopsis and Discussion
AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT TODAY
AN OZONE HIGH POLLUTION ADVISORY HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR TUESDAY APRIL 21
Increased easterly winds - with gusts near 25 mph at times - helped keep
local ozone accumulation below its potential on Sunday. A lighter wind
regime is underway today, and mostly light winds are looking likely for
Tuesday. Ozone production this a.m. is running well ahead of Sunday; a
number of monitoring sites - including Central Phoenix, Glendale, North
Phoenix, South Scottsdale, and West Phoenix - indicated 20-30 part per
billion hourly increases at times between 7:00 and 10:00 a.m. The axis
of a very strong ridge aloft will be directly over Arizona tomorrow and
afternoon temperatures are forecast to reach the 100-degree mark over
most of the desert region under mostly sunny skies. These weather
conditions are highly conducive to above average Valley ozone production
and accumulation; providing that the ozone chemical precursor ratio
(VOCs to NOx) remains supportive, a significant portion of the metro
area will be susceptible to unhealthy levels ozone readings by late
afternoon on Tuesday. Thus, an Ozone High Pollution has been issued.
Persons with respiratory conditions should consider curtailing afternoon
outdoor activities.
