Synopsis and Discussion
A tight gradient due to surface high pressure building over the western
U.S. has brought gusty easterly winds to the local forecast area this
a.m. These winds have contributed to a few elevated hourly PM-10 (coarse
particle) concentrations; even so, at 10:00 a.m. readings Valley-wide
ranged from 26.1ug/m3 at the West Phoenix monitoring site to 90.3ug/m3
at Higley to 130.2ug/m3 at Buckeye. Local ozone production was
definitely higher than 24 hours ago and readings at 10:00 a.m. were at
or above 60 parts per billion at West Phoenix, Glendale, North Phoenix,
and Cave Creek. With afternoon temperatures peaking near 90 degrees F
and a more southerly p.m. wind component present, Tuesday appeared to be
an "up" day ozone-wise; however, the filtering of sunshine due to
increasing high clouds has tempered the forecast concentrations downward
a bit. Another high wind and blowing dust episode still appears likely
on Wednesday but it remains to be seen whether or not a PM-10 High
Pollution Advisory will be needed; that question will be answered with
Tuesday's air quality forecast. -Reith
