Synopsis and Discussion
On Monday extensive cloud cover helped keep local ozone production well
below its potential, but thunderstorm outflow winds managed to generate
some areas of dust; observers at Phoenix, Goodyear, Falcon Field, and
Chandler airfields all reported blowing dust in the area; the visibility
at Chandler briefly dropped to eight miles at 5:00 p.m. Unsettled
weather conditions are expected the next few days as
monsoon moisture continues to increase ahead of a nearly stationary
upper level trough over California. In addition, moist southerly flow
associated with Tropical Storm Lowell has begun over the Gulf of
California and Lower Colorado River Valley. These features should
guarantee additional outbreaks of showers and thunderstorms thru
Thursday. Under these conditions significant ozone level increases are
highly unlikely, but brief periods of dense blowing dust/high PM-10
concentrations in the vicinity of thunderstorms is possible. -Reith
