Synopsis and Discussion
It was a rather stagnant morning to start off the new work week. Local
ACARS sounding data indicated the overnight formation of a moderate (5-6
deg C) surface-based radiation inversion that extended to near 1400'.
That, combined with mostly light winds, contributed to a noticeable
example of the Valley Brown Cloud of trapped particle pollutants over
the metro area. Some hourly PM-10 (coarse particle) concentrations
included 267.3ug/m3 at the West Forty Third monitoring site, 164.6ug/m3
at Durango, and 147.5ug/m3 at West Phoenix - all at 7:00 a.m. Hourly
fine particle (PM-2.5) readings reached 33.1ug/m3 at Durango at 8:00
a.m. Fortunately, the mid-latitude storm track will undergo
amplification over the western U.S. on Tuesday and Wednesday. Strong
high pressure building over the Great Basin on Wednesday will promote
periodic local north to northeasterly breezes by Tuesday afternoon that
will help somewhat with ventilation of the Valley air mass. Particle
pollutant concentrations are expected to peak on Tuesday then decrease
on Wednesday. -Reith
