Synopsis and Discussion
A PM-2.5 HEALTH WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT TODAY
A dense shield of sub-tropical middle and high etage clouds - with a few
embedded light showers - has moved over the Valley; partial clearing may
take place this afternoon and evening. These clouds are the precursor
of an upper level low and trough in the southern branch of the
mid-latitude storm track that will continue to slowly approach from the
west the next 36 hours. A few thunderstorms on Wednesday may cause
brief period of gusty winds and blowing dust at some locations, but
forecast models are still projecting a storm rainfall total of between
1/2" and 1" over the local forecast area by Friday morning. This much
rainfall would go a long way toward stabilizing areas of disturbed
desert soil and would help keep PM-10 (coarse particle) levels much
below their potential for at least a few weeks. On the other hand,
cooler weather may prompt more people to use their fireplaces, the smoke
from which can cause rapid increases in fine particle (PM-2.5) levels
once a stable weather pattern returns. At any rate, overall good air
quality is expected by Thursday - a welcome event any time of the year.
