Synopsis and Discussion
A PM-2.5 HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR TUESDAY NOVEMBER 25
As the previous version of this product noted, some local fine particle
(PM-2.5) levels increased dramatically during the weekend - most likely
due to smoke from fireplace use. The West Phoenix monitoring equipment
on Sunday registered an hourly PM-2.5 concentration as high as 52.4ug/m3
at 10:00 p.m.; the highest Valley 8-hour average carbon monoxide level
of the season thus far also occurred there. The average coarse particle
(PM-10) level there was 65.1ug/m3, and calculations reveal that 43% of
it consisted of fine particles; at Phoenix Supersite it was 47%.
Stagnation due to a 7+ deg C surface-based inversion that extended to
1900' contributed to particle levels that were very high at some sites
this morning; PM-10 hourly concentrations included 321.1ug/m3 at Durango
and 381.0ug/m3 at Higley - both at 9:00 a.m. The highest PM-2.5 level
was 40.8ug/m3 at Durango. Tuesday may well end up being another
stagnant day as thick high-level cloud cover impedes both vertical
(sunlight) and horizontal (winds) mixing. Since fireplace may continue
or increase, a PM-2.5 Health Watch has been issued. A rather vigorous
but slow moving upper level trough in the southern branch of the
mid-latitude storm track is advertised to bring cloudy and unsettled
weather to the metro area for the next few days. Showers and a few
thunderstorms are possible by Wednesday afternoon, and outflow winds
from them as well as an increase in gradient winds may generate areas of
blowing dust until the onset of significant precipitation.
