Synopsis and Discussion
A PM-10 HEALTH WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT TODAY
A mid-morning local ACARS sounding indicated that the best mixing depth
today will be near 4100' and that dispersion is MARGINAL. In addition,
a moderate (6-7 deg c) surface-based radiation inversion that extended
to 1300+' formed overnight but has since dissipated. Under these
conditions, some rather high hourly particle pollutant levels were
measured; West Forty Third had PM-10 (coarse particle) readings near
250ug/m3 from 6:00 a.m. thru 8:00 a.m., and Durango had 220ug/m3 at 7:00
a.m. along with 36ug/m3 of fine particles (PM-2.5). A very stable air
mass associated with a strong ridge aloft is expected to persist over
the local forecast area thru at least Thursday. After some respite on
Tuesday due to an increase in surface winds, this weather pattern may
again place the Valley at risk for unhealthy particle pollutant levels
as soon as Wednesday. -Reith
