Synopsis and Discussion
Easterly winds this weekend could be a blessing or a curse. High
pressure to our west will continue to strengthen and slowly move inland.
Unfortunately for southern Californians, in means the return of the
Santa Ana winds which have already sparked several wild fires. Here in
the Arizona deserts, we may see some stronger gusts Saturday afternoon,
peaking around 25 mph at times. It's possible that the winds could help
clear the Valley's air out. But on the other hand, they could stir up
some additional dust, helping to paint the trapped air below the morning
inversions. Either way, next week does not look good with high pressure
moving over the region and Marginal to Poor ventilation setting up. The
only positive will be the warmer weather. Afternoon desert temperatures
will be in the mid 80s through much of next week under sunny skies.
Because of the possible stronger gust on Saturday, we will go with
the upper "Moderate" range for PM-10. Some improvement may occur on
Sunday. As mentioned above, decreasing ventilation combined with
work-week traffic will likely lead to at least one or two Health Watches
next week, if not HPAs. Check back on Sunday for more on that. Until
then, have a great weekend! -J.Paul
