Synopsis and Discussion
Latest Sky Harbor Airport ACARS sounding data indicates that significant
warming aloft has occurred over the Valley since 24 hours ago and that
as a result the best mixing depth has lowered to near 4300' and that
dispersion today will be in the FAIR range. Also, a moderate (6-7 deg
C) surface-based radiation inversion that formed overnight reached to
about 1600'. A profound Valley Brown Cloud of trapped particle
pollution could be seen overhead and is well documented at
http://www.phoenixvis.net/. Even so, local monitoring sites indicate
that hourly PM-10 (coarse particle) levels were not excessive; at 7:00
a.m. West Forty Third, Coyote Lakes, and Durango all had concentrations
between 185 and 190ug/m3. The highest PM-2.5 (fine particle) level was
near 33ug/m3. Higher near-surface moisture levels appear to be playing
a role in the visual aspect of the pollution today. A strong ridge
aloft located off the California coast will continue to bring a stable
weather regime to the local forecast area. Fortunately, improved
ventilation provided by increasing gradient winds by Friday afternoon
should keep particle pollution levels below their potential, and an
episode of cleansing gusty easterly winds is expected to occur on
Saturday.
