Synopsis and Discussion
A PM-10 HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR TUESDAY NOVEMBER 11
In the wake of Sunday's trough and frontal passage - and the associated strong wind and blowing dust event - a strong ridge aloft is poised to begin building over AZ from the west by mid-week. Lingering suspended dust particles contributed to elevated hourly PM-10 readings this morning that included 153.0ug/m3 at the Higley monitoring site, 142.5ug/m3 at West Forty Third, and 133.7ug/m3 at Durango; as of 10:00 a.m. some sites still had levels in excess of 100ug/m3. Warming aloft over the Valley will begin on Tuesday and is advertised to attain 9 deg F in the 5-10K' layer by the afternoon. Meanwhile, winds are expected to be relatively light and the mixing depth may shrink to as low as 5K'. With some elevated PM-10 concentration carry-over from today and a steep inversion Tuesday morning possible, coarse particle levels may approach unhealthy levels on Tuesday despite the reduction in holiday emissions. For these reasons, a PM-10 Health Watch has been issued for tomorrow. As the leading edge of the ridge aloft begins to build overhead on Wednesday, increasing gradient winds are anticipated to result in an improvement in ventilation of the Valley air mass and somewhat lower particle pollutant levels.
