Synopsis and Discussion
*AN OZONE HIGH POLLUTION ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR FRIDAY, MAY 30,
2008 and
HAS BEEN EXTENDED THROUGH SUNDAY, JUNE 1, 2008*
It was a strange day for air quality on Thursday. With an Ozone Health
Watch was in effect, ozone levels actually dropped into the "Good" range
at all the local monitoring sites with little change to the weather
pattern. There are several avenues of speculation for: the major
traffic delays on I-10 due to an early morning accident, or possibly
stiff upper-air winds mixing down to the surface just to name a couple.
Either way, air quality turned out to be fairly decent. Then the sun
went down on Thursday. An overnight import episode caused local ozone
levels to increase, raising the bar for Friday's ozone generation. So
far all in-town monitors are ramping at an incredible pace, so the Ozone
High Pollution Advisory in effect for Friday may still be validated.
Upstream monitors at Yuma and Alamo Lake back this up with elevated
ozone levels on Thursday. Forecast models suggest that this flow of
ozone and precursors into the Valley will continue through the weekend.
As a result, we are extending the Ozone High Pollution Advisory through
Sunday. Check back on Sunday for a look at the coming week's forecast
and if/when the air quality is expected to improve. Have a great
weekend! -J.Paul
