Synopsis and Discussion

A PM-10 HEALTH WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT TODAY THURSDAY MAY 22

Area residents took it on the chin on Wednesday air quality-wise with an

unpleasant combination of unhealthy PM-10 (coarse particle) levels and

near-unhealthy ozone concentrations. Lots of trapped suspended dust

under thick cloud cover this morning has kept visibilities poor and

local air contamination high; thus, the PM-10 Health Watch will

continue. Thankfully, the worst appears to be over and significant

improvement is likely to have occurred by this time tomorrow. By Friday

the presence of extensive cloud cover, cooler afternoon temperatures,

showers, breezy winds, and the cessation of transport from California

should keep ozone production and accumulation well below its potential

with good AQI marks expected. Increasing showers and thunderstorms are

predicted by this evening, courtesy of increasing moisture and

instability associated with a deep cyclonic circulation center overhead

- extremely atypical for this time of year. Gusty winds and more blowing

dust from downdrafts may initially increase PM-10 levels in some areas,

but by Friday more widespread precipitation should keep particle

pollutants down. -Reith
