Synopsis and Discussion
AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THURSDAY MAY 15
Local ozone levels were surprisingly high on Wednesday, in light of the
strong gusty winds, afternoon highs only near 80 degrees F., and thick
cloud cover at times thru the day. Combined with elevated PM-10 levels
due to periods of blowing dust, yesterday's metro air quality was
marginal at best. A few ozone monitors this morning were reporting
hourly levels similar to those of 24 hours ago. In the wake of
Tuesday's trough and frontal passage a huge ridge aloft is in the
process of building over the western U.S. However, energy in the
northerly flow on the ridge's eastern flank is forecast to develop into
a weak low and trough over northern Mexico by Thursday afternoon. The
circulation around the low will bring an easterly wind regime to the
Valley which means that highest ozone levels will tend to be located
over the central metro area rather than farther east. Since ozone
levels are already near unhealthy levels with some re-circulation
possible, an Ozone Health Watch has been issued for Thursday. -Reith
