Synopsis and Discussion
Who ordered this wind-blowing, cloud-covering, rain/snow producing storm
system over Arizona this morning?!? What a springtime disturbance, huh?
Partly cloudy skies prevail for now over the Valley as the center of the
system near Wickenburg moves south a bit more before heading east.
Northerly winds have been good enough to clear out a lot of the stagnant
pollution we've endured the past several days. Blowing dust did occur
for a short time Tuesday morning, but visibility seems to be improving
(http://phoenixvis.net). Ozone should drop off on Wednesday with most
sights in the "Good" range while a couple may touch the lower part of
the "Moderate" category. Particulates will also decrease considerably
the next couple days, especially in places that actually did receive
some wet stuff (Yavapai/Maricopa County border). Temperatures have also
dipped considerably as well (cold enough for 2-5 inches of snow in
Flagstaff!). Despite the sunshine this afternoon, Phoenix will likely
only reach the low 80s, if that on Tuesday (no, it's not cold enough to
start those fireplaces again!). The trough will linger through Friday,
actually digging toward the southwest. This means that by Friday and
Saturday we will have a northeasterly flow across the forecast area.
Though it isn't associated with a Four Corners high pressure system,
this directional flow tends to lock ozone and precursor in the Valley,
ultimately leading to higher concentrations. We'll keep an eye on that
scenario for the weekend. By Saturday, high pressure will return,
warming the Valley to near triple digit temperatures. In the meantime,
enjoy the much improved weather and air quality. Have a good day!
