Synopsis and Discussion
AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT TODAY MAY 05
A PM-10 HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR TUESDAY MAY 06
Roller-coaster type weather and air quality will be the rule the next
few days. A potent upper level low and trough in the southern branch of
the mid-latitude storm track, currently located off the Baja coast, will
move overhead on Tuesday. Local thunderstorm formation is possible by
noon; a dry low-level air mass will increase the potential for strong
down-drafts and areas of dense blowing dust that may persist into the
early evening hours. A PM-10 (coarse particle) Health Watch has been
issued as a precaution for those with heart or lung disease. Cooler
temperatures, cloud cover, and winds should help reduce ozone formation
and keep levels much lower than those of the past two weeks.
Unfortunately, another strong influx of ozone and/or its precursors from
California is likely to begin by late Tuesday and continue thru much of
Wednesday in the wake of the departing trough. A quick rebound in
afternoon temperatures under sunny skies will promote efficient ozone
formation. Similar events have contributed to unhealthy local ozone
levels recently, and a High Pollution Advisory issuance may be necessary
for Wednesday. -Reith
