Synopsis and Discussion
AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR MONDAY MAY 05
Unhealthy ground-level ozone levels were recorded over portions of the Phoenix metro area for the third consecutive day yesterday, but widespread geographical coverage was confined to Saturdays high ozone event. Mostly light winds throughout the day kept local ozone production high and allowed above average accumulation to occur. Breezy southwesterly surface winds this afternoon should become southerly on Monday, and locations downwind of the city center, e.g., Cave Creek, will be at the highest risk for high ozone concentrations; therefore, an Ozone Health Watch has been issued for Monday. An upper level low and trough in the southern branch of the mid-latitude storm track is forecast to form off the Baja coast on Monday and move slowly east thru the period. Increasing moisture is likely both at the surface and aloft by Monday with a slight chance for showers or thunderstorms on Tuesday. Outflow boundaries from convective activity/downdrafts may bring strong winds and areas of blowing dust on Tuesday. However, significant mid-level cloud cover along with the prospect of gusty and shifting winds should help to temporarily inhibit ozone production/accumulation.
