Synopsis and Discussion
*Same day Ozone Health Watch has been issued for today, Thursday, May 1,
2008*
Though ozone concentrations plummeted Wednesday here in the Phoenix
forecast area with the strong winds clearing the Valley of some of the
accumulated pollution, more ozone and precursors are still filtering in
from the west. Yuma's ozone was at 97 AQI on Wednesday, and with a
westerly flow overnight into early this morning, we are already seeing
concentrations quickly ramp once again. The lower of the Federal health
standard this season to 76 part per billion (ppb) from 85 ppb doesn't
give us much room to play with. Therefore, we are issuing a rare "same
day" Ozone Health Watch for Thursday. Winds are expected to shift out
of the north this afternoon which should shut off the flow of ozone and
precursors from the west. Lingering pollution will likely mean that
ozone concentrations will be back in the mid to upper "Moderate" range
again on Friday before dropping off slightly over the weekend. There
was another PM10 exceedance yesterday at the West 43rd site due to the
strong winds we had much of the day. With high pressure returning
Friday through the weekend, we will see afternoon desert temperatures
warm to the low to mid 90s, increasing mixing heights, decrease winds,
and hopefully lowing particulate concentrations across the Phoenix
forecast area. Check back tomorrow for a closer look at your weekend's
weather and air quality. Have a good day! -J.Paul
