Health message for Wednesday, Mar 12: Unusually sensitive people should
consider reducing prolonged or heavy exertion.
Synopsis and Discussion
Mostly sunny, warm, and somewhat stagnant weather conditions - the
latter mainly during the morning hours - will continue today and
Wednesday. By Thursday afternoon the main branch of the mid-latitude
storm track will have become displaced southward off the California
coast, guided by a by very strong (160+knots) jet stream. Low-level
gradients over Arizona will become increasingly tight and winds aloft
increasingly strong by late in the work week. As a result, local
surface winds from the west and northwest are predicted to become strong
and gusty by Friday; some blowing dust is possible. In the meantime,
favorable afternoon dispersion will contribute to relatively low
particle pollutant levels and highest concentrations are anticipated to
be no higher than the mid-moderate range of the Air Quality Index.
Low-level winds will be capable of transporting additional ozone
precursors from California by Thursday; if so, ozone levels should peak
then. -Reith
