Synopsis and Discussion
Yesterday was almost a carbon copy of the day before air quality-wise with a little lower concentration of ozone and bit high levels of Particulates. How about those storms that moved north into southern and eastern Maricopa County last evening?! There were a few places in the southeastern metro area around Gilbert, Mesa and Queen Creek that saw some brief rain, but the lightning associated with these cells spark some large fires along the Salt River in the southwest part of the Valley. Surface dewpoints are in the upper 50s this morning in Phoenix and the Lifted Index, a measure of the atmosphere's capability to support severe weather, is now slightly negative. The more negative, the more likely the chances are for severe storms. However, the CAPE, or measure of the amount of energy in the atmosphere, is only 153 Joules/Kilogram. Typically we like to see that around 1,000 or higher. Models are now showing that Mexico will begin to light up with storms just south of Arizona through next week. This will only add to our potential. There's a possibility of storms near Tucson again this afternoon which could send some more dust and additional storm cells north towards the Valley. If this occurs, particulate levels will likely go up again. Ozone is expected to remain in the low to mid "Moderate" range for another couple of days due to the southerly flow. It should be a pretty good weekend for swimming as afternoon desert temperatures will again be around 110°F with higher humidity. Check back tomorrow for the latest weekend weather and air quality. Have a good day! -J.Paul
