Synopsis and Discussion

*AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR FRIDAY, JUNE 20,
and AN OZONE HIGH POLLUTION ADVISORY HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR SATURDAY, JUNE
21, 2008*

Tuesday saw a high temperature of 113F in Phoenix. We expected to
repeat on Friday and Saturday with some Valley hotspots reaching 115F!
So far, 17 of the first 20 days in June have been above the century
mark. I think it's safe to say we'll stay there for a while. And oh,
by the way, today is the first day of summer! The silver lining...? By
next Saturday (June 28) we should begin to see some moisture begin to
pump north into the deserts from Mexico. Not that we will have
thunderstorms right away, but it will help to moderate the temperatures
a bit (107 instead of 114). Now for some more numbers... there has
already been 9 days out of the first 19 in June with an exceedance (only
one under the old standard of 85 ppb). The silver lining...? There
really isn't one at this point. Ozone precursors continue to stream in
from the southwest, combining with our own metropolitan pollution. With
high pressure continuing to strengthen, winds will remain relatively
light and dispersion will be low. This results in more elevated ozone
concentrations. On top of that, we typically see some of our highest
levels with the initial monsoon wind shift, where the flow becomes
easterly at nearly all levels of the atmosphere. That shift could come
within the next two weeks. In the mean time, we are issuing an Ozone
HPA for Saturday and a Health Watch for Sunday. We'll re-evaluate
everything again on Sunday. So until then, remember to take it easy
outside. Not only because of the air quality, but the excessive heat as
well. Have a great weekend! -J.Paul
