Synopsis and Discussion
TODAY'S OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN EXTENDED THRU FRIDAY JUNE 20
Breezy desert afternoon winds that gusted to near 30 mph on Wednesday
afternoon were instrumental in preventing local ozone pollution
accumulation and in keeping relatively low ozone levels over the
forecast area. Today appears to be a different story, however. An
11:00 a.m. Phoenix ACARS sounding indicates that winds aloft over the
Valley are 10 mph or less all the way up to 15K'; thus, unlike
Wednesday, afternoon winds today will be almost completely a function of
daytime heating and upslope flow. All but one Valley airport were
reporting light or calm surface wind speeds at noon compared to 10-20
mph 24 hours ago. This implies that above-average ozone accumulation
will occur before the plume is moved to the northeast and east later
today. Since locations in that portion of the metro area will be at
risk for elevated ozone concentrations by early evening, today's Ozone
Health Watch will remain in effect. A similar situation is expected to
occur on Friday prompting an extension of the Watch. Stronger winds and
lower ozone levels are predicted to return this weekend despite
afternoon high temperatures near 115 deg F. -Reith
