Synopsis and Discussion
TODAY'S OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN EXTENDED THRU TUESDAY JUNE 17
A strong ridge aloft has become established over Arizona and will
contribute to Valley temperatures above 110 deg F the next few days.
These conditions under mostly sunny skies will yield above average ozone
production, but afternoon westerly winds will tend to produce below
average accumulation. However, the flow aloft is advertised to become
more conducive to additional ozone/precursor transport from Southern
California by Tuesday morning and especially by Wednesday afternoon.
Thus, since the dip in afternoon ozone levels typically seen under these
circumstances may not occur tomorrow, today's Ozone Health Watch has
been extended thru Tuesday with northeast and east metro locations at
the highest risk for unhealthy ozone levels. At 10:00 a.m. local hourly
ozone concentrations ranged from 33 parts per billion at Glendale to 55
ppb at South Phoenix, and increases over the past hour ranged from four
ppb to 16 ppb. At noon Valley airports were reporting temperatures in
the 102-105 deg F range and winds were southerly to westerly up 10 mph.
Latest ACARS sounding data indicated that the best mixing depth will be
near 13,500' and that winds thru that layer were mostly <15 mph. -Reith
