Synopsis and Discussion
*AN OZONE HIGH POLLUTION ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR FRIDAY, JUNE 13
AND HAS BEEN EXTENDED THROUGH SUNDAY, JUNE 15, 2008*
There were six more exceedances of the 8-hr Ozone standard in the forecast network on Thursday, three of which are in the Maricopa County Non-Attainment area. With little change in the weather pattern and concentrations already starting out much higher than 24 hours ago, there's a very good chance that there will be several more locations exceeding the standard on Friday. Temperatures will only get warmer this weekend, with Phoenix expected to reach 112°F. On top of that, there will be some pre-monsoon moisture moving north into Arizona from Mexico due to the clock-wise rotation of the high pressure system to our southeast. Yuma will be around 110°F on Saturday with dew points near 60°F! That's pretty sticky for the deserts! Here in the Phoenix forecast area, dew points will be in the mid to upper 40s on Sunday and Monday. Westerly winds early next week will dry us back out, but it's a reminder that Arizona's thunderstorm season is right around the corner. With the start of the Arizona Monsoon Season being redefined this year, it will officially begin this Sunday, June 15th state-wide regardless of whether the dew points are 55°F or higher for three consecutive days here in Phoenix. As far as the air quality goes, we're extending the Ozone HPA through Sunday. Hopefully there will be a little bit of change in the forecast by then that we can let it expire on Sunday without further extension. In the meantime, this will be a good opportunity to enjoy the comforts of your air conditioned homes and local swimming pools! Check back on Sunday for the latest. Have a great weekend! -J.Paul
