Synopsis and Discussion
Twelve... No, that's not the number of days left until Christmas. It's the number of Ozone exceedances that occurred across the Phoenix forecast area on Monday! With high pressure to the southeast and a trough of low pressure to our northwest, the flow across Arizona on Monday was and continues to be today out of the south to slightly southwest. This means that it wasn't a Southern Californian transport scenario that affected the Valley. It was likely a combination of warm temperatures (high of 105°F), relatively light winds (average of 4 mph), sunny skies, and work-week commuter traffic. This episode was home grown. San Diego/L.A.-generated ozone will be impacting the Colorado River region on Tuesday, from Lake Havasu up through Las Vegas. A change in the weather pattern late Tuesday through Wednesday should bring us some relief in the way of ozone. In response to the western U.S. trough moving east, winds will increase across the deserts Wednesday afternoon. This will likely shut down ozone production early, resulting in lower concentrations. However, we could also see periods of blowing dust at times, increasing Particulate levels to the upper "Moderate" range. High pressure will return on Thursday, hopefully stabilizing local pollution and weather of a while. Check back tomorrow for the latest. Have a good day! -J.Paul
