Synopsis and Discussion
AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT TODAY JUNE 06
The combination of a relatively light wind regime over the area, sunny
skies, and very warm afternoon temperatures will mean efficient ozone
production and above average accumulation over the metro area; some
locations may ultimately have concentrations that approach the unhealthy
category today. The approach and continued proximity of an upper level
trough over the western U.S. this weekend will mean an increase in
afternoon south to southwesterly winds. Ozone/precursor transport from
California is expected to be minimal, so said valley winds should help
evacuate the metro Phoenix ozone plume downwind; however, sites located
there, such as Tonto Nat'l Monument, Rio Verde, and Humbolt Mountain,
will have the highest potential for elevated ozone levels. Otherwise,
air quality is predicted to be relatively good with rather low particle
pollutant levels thru the weekend. -Reith
