Synopsis and Discussion

Valley residents had to endure yet another high air pollution event on
Wednesday and Wednesday night in the form of unhealthy wind-driven
coarse particle (PM-10) levels and elevated to near-unhealthy ozone
concentrations - the latter mainly over the far northeastern and eastern
metro areas. Some hourly PM-10 levels included 644.9ug/m3 at the West
Forty Third monitoring site in west Phoenix, 656.0ug/m3 at the Coyote
Lakes site in northwest Phoenix, and 771.6ug/m3 in Buckeye; even higher
readings occurred after midnight. (These numbers pale in comparison to
the 2341.4ug/m3 reading in Yuma, however). Thick suspended dust was
still lingering over the metro area at daybreak, but by 9:00 a.m. most
hourly levels had dropped below 50ug/m3. For the day both ozone and
particle pollutant levels are expected to peak in the mid-moderate range
of the Air Quality Index, but ozone is expected to trend upward rapidly
on Friday. Light overnight winds will encourage inversion formation and
efficient titration (zone depletion), so locations north and east of the
Valley center will be most at risk for elevated ozone on Friday
afternoon. Afternoon temperatures will again approach 100 degrees, and
a relatively light wind regime will promote above average accumulation
before the plume drifts slowly to the northeast by late afternoon.
